In this Instagram era of nano-second attention spans, being able to distill a complex issue to its essence is essential to capture the world’s attention. One of the most effective story forms is the so-called Explainer, which tells the reader everything he or she needs to know on a subject in pithy and concise prose. Here are some explanors I wrote for The New York Times, on issues ranging from the war in Ukraine, Prince Andrew’s legal problems, the conflict in Gaza and the wildfires that have convulsed Canada.
